HRH Prince Charles became the first member of the Royal Family to travel on Tramlink. He arrived at East Croydon by car before taking a special tram to New Addington. Large Crowds built up at East Croydon and New Addington awaiting his arrival. After meeting crowds on the platform, he boarded 2549 complete with Royal Pennant on the Wing Mirror!

The Prince had expressed a wish to meet ordinary staff and so travelling with him on the tram were ordinary Tram Drivers, Revenue Inspectors, Fitters and Cleaners as well as the Mayor of Croydon, Cllr Mary Walker, the Croydon Central MP, TCL Chairman, Bob Dorey and other members of Tramlink Management and Croydon Council.

The Special Tram departed about 1320 from East Croydon and stopped at Addington Village to pick up some Wheelchair users and parents with buggies. It then continued to New Addington with the Prince travelling in the Cab. After meeting some of the people of New Addington, the Prince left by Car for further engagements at Community Projects in the Fieldway Estate.
